Can someone recommend a diagnostic code reader for my 1999 W210 E220 CDI please?

I'm looking for a hand held item not one that connects to a laptop.
Thanks!

There is nothing handheld available as far as I'm aware.
The only options I'm aware of are Carsoft (as opposed to iCarsoft) and Star.

You may get away with a generic reader and 38 pin adapter cable but you will only be able to read generic engine codes so nothing from gearbox, SRS, ABS etc.

I use my iCarsoft 980 that way (in generic mode) but if it needs a deeper dive I use either my Star or Carsoft.
If you go Carsoft make sure it has the large multiplexor connector to the car (38 pins or more) and not the small multiplexor connector to the car (9 pins or so).

Thanks,
So the Carsoft system, does that require plugging into a laptop?
If so I'll probably go with a generic.

Yes Carsoft is laptop based. I use a Panasonic Toughbook. Whole kit fits inside my spare wheel and runs off the car battery. @V6Matty sometimes has these available.
As I said generic may or may not work and will only read engine codes (and a subset at that). You'll also need an OBD2 to 38 pin converter cable (these need pin 4 connected to have any chance of working).
