Hey all, got a whole new problem. Ive got an 86 190e. When started cold, it persists to cut out. Youll turn the key, and it doesnt go up to about 1300rpm for a few seconds like most mercs do. It just goes on up to about 600 - 700 rpm and will idle as loong as theres no load . You put it into R or D and it starts shuddering, (although the idle speed is still relativly close to what it says in the merc manual). Sometimes itll cut out when you put it into D or R, sometimes itll cutout after you take your foot of the accelerator (most common). Ive adjusted my idle mixture as it was hunting a little bit before, thats fixed, i also adjusted my timing as it was pinking. These have had very little affect when its cold. When the car heats up its fine....... Im thinking it could be the sender for the auto choke? I know my dads 260e had this problem....

hellppppp guys!!!

Mine has been doing this recently, it's a pain in the....

This morning was especially bad, but there was a lot of early morning dew everywhere, so I'm wondering if it was the same thing.

yep it sounds like fuel starvation , which would point straight away to the choke , either that or youve got an air leak in the inlet manifold area.

if you have a 190e car, then surely it has a fuel injection system-hence no autochoke as there is no carburettor in the fuel injected system-it could however be a faulty cold start valve ,which is the the eqivalent of the the choke on a carburettor engine.

well it was the most unlikely thing...

I took out the spark plugs....

readjusted the spaces, they were all different spaces much to smaller space.....

Did a guess with the spacing, does any one know what the correct spacing is for a 190e 1986? Also one of the spark plugs was quite loose.....

Runs great now! Just gotta get the base idle right and itll be great!!

if you are using bosch-h7dc spark plugs ,then the correct spark plug gap is 0.8mm

hehe if one of your spark plugs was loose that would do it , it would be running on 3 cylinders on startup! hence the idle problem

come on legoman

hehe now come on legoman.....no laughing at the newbie :p

It didnt sound like it was running on 3 cylinders....it was just giving a random splutter.....

thanks every one for ur advice!!

Just one quick query.....the idle stabaliser.....(below the air cleaner. it has a little black wheel on it) Ive been turning the black wheel to adjust idle speed..... is this the correct way to do it?
