Cold stalling 300SE

Hi

I've just bought my first Benz...an '88 300SE. I'm really chuffed with it (my last was a Mk1 Clio!) but it's got a couple of little things that need sorting out. A mate suggested this forum would be a good place for help :)

The main problem is that when first starting it from cold, it will die straight away if you don't give it some revs. The idle in general feels a little lumpy, though it never stalls once warm.

I'm told it could be the cold start valve, but being new to MB (and lacking a Haynes) I don't really have much else to go on. I've had a search, but didn't find much there either.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated :)

Rob

Hello,
It might be worth you getting the fuel mixtures checked!!!
I've seen similar faults on the 103 engines before and found the air/fuel mixture to be out!!

Worth a go before you throw parts at it!!

Good Luck

Really? I'd never have thought of that! Would that surely not effect the general running though?

Yes your right but i've have had it cause a probelm just when cold before it wasn't out by much but was out enough to cause a probelm! Thought i'd post it as it's something else you can check. Also you could try cleaning out the idle control valve!!!

Good Luck !

Cold Start

Hi Rob,

Just had similar problems with my 300CE. When cold it would idle as if on 4 or 5 cylinders. When drive engaged it simply would give up the ghost. However if left to warm up it would eventually mange to pull away. Diagonsed as an Idle Speed Actuator Unit after several Auto Electircians were dumbfounded. My local garage eventually managed to source the unit, (Bosch) and fit it. I will check with him for the Bosch Part No. and let you know.

Dave.

That's a new suggestion...thanks Dave :)

I had a chat with a my mechanically-minded neighbour who gave me a few simple suggestions, mainly around making sure all the pipes are airtight
