sounds like air in the fuel system. check the clear pipes for loads of air circulating when it is cranking but not starting. alternately fill the tank up and park it facing down a steep incline, if it starts ok then it is an air problem. usual culprits are leaking 'o'-rings and fuel filters.

I have a same problem too, I left the car idle for a couple of days and when i tried to start it, it just keeps turning over or goes for a few seconds on but engine it very rough then engine dies down again. Have to step on the gas pedal and keep on reving it until the idle seems stable. After which, it all seems fine again? WHY WHY WHY? Please help anyone? why is this happening?

Once you have air getting into the fuel lines then excessive cranking will be needed to start it.

The reason is that you can compress air, but not diesel, the diesel injectors only open at a certain pressure, so once air is in the system the starter motor just cannot build up enough pressure, by spinning it without stopping, is the best way, but it will shorten the life of the motor.

The fitting of new O rings on the fuel pipes normally fixes things, often with a diesel if parked over night on a slope it will start when faced in one direction, but not in the other

Hi, I had a cold start problem. I have just changed the prefilter which has a rubber seal on it. These have a history of squaring off. Cost 2.50 from my main dealer. Fingers crossed.
