Put the nut back to where it was G, then tapped over the locker on the other side of the nut.......way I have always done it mate........

I do the same mate. You need to pull the guts out to set the pinion preload accurately with a new crush sleeve, and I only do that when replacing all the bearings. I've seen plenty of pinion bearing failures from over tightening the nut though. I think a tech in the local dealership round here had trouble counting ;)

SNew adjuster now fitted so we have a good tension on the fan belt, old one really poor state....


Is that new tensioner Febi? I ask because Febi parts seem to get very varied reports on quality. I ask also as most of your other replacements for this delightful car seem to be MB original.

What are others' attitudes to Febi?

I ordered Lemfoerder flex discs for mine and the wretched people sent Febi. However, on inspection, they turned out to be SGF, so I didn't send them back. I did buy a set of MB original nuts and bolts to install in place of the Febi-supplied ones. Am I being too sceptical?

Am most impressed with this coupe restoration and am hoping to achieve something similar on my old Sportline. Not looking for concourse but I'm hoping another 25 years might be possible.

Febi, as far as I know, don't make their own parts. They just repackage. Sometimes you get a top quality OEM part. Sometimes you get an iffy aftermarket job.

A pro no doubt knows which Febi stuff to trust. I tend to avoid unless there's no OEM part available and genuine is super expensive.

Few updates

One thing my car had missing from day one, simple plastic jacking points....



Couldnt be arsed to try to free of the tie rods for full alinement, they looked nasty and suspect there as old as the car...



Next was to let Merlin do the castor and camber and toe......



One thing that has always bothered me is the rear tints, i followed it the other week when Merlin tested it and couldnt believe how bad it looked....what i didnt realise was just how hard it would be to remove them even using a heat gun....





You can see how sticky was left on the window



Note the club sticker



Next job was to fit the original hirschman body and new wip to replace the cheapy noisy one....





Birthday pressie from a mate of mine



In some point of the cars life, its had a alarm system with sensors screwed on to the A piller trims, hate holes in trim, who ever fitted them broke the clips of as well, so had to replace them....



A lot of money but you face them every time you drive it so had to be done...

Rusty battery tray, removed and popped it over the road to get it powder coated....



Best thing i have done to this car was today, altho i liked the look of it, the sound wasnt for this car....



The other part had a small hole so out with the pair....





Shame they cut the bumper, have a spare but need to get it painted

More as it happens.....

Small update, MOT run out some time ago so she’s been sat out on the drive due to the moggy minor nicking her garage, put her in for a mot and she burst a rear brake pipe while on the brake rollers, it was hidden above the subframe, I had replaced the other rear ones a few years ago but obviously thought that one was ok at that time, I also found that the thread in the T piece was a bit nasty so ordered a new one from merc for £20, I forgot how nice parts were from the era from merc, really nice heavy duty not like the cheap stuff nowadays!!   1. While I had some ramp time in the workshop I thought I would replace the front RPM sensor which I have known to be faulty and throwing the ABS light on, bought one from #3 pointed parts for a bargain price, ( brand new old stock ) delivered the very next day, great service as always from our own Rob, no more ABS light on,
  2. This year we should see a load more updates, she gonna be a wedding car next to our moggy which is being fully restored as we speak, the sunroof has to be removed and have knew drains welded in and new seals, then hope to get her stripped and a full repaint, watch this space!

Well, I done today a job I have been putting of for years, it’s always had a water leak through the sunroof drain rusted away, Also the roof never did the rear tilt due to a broken linkage, got a 2nd hand sunroof Of the bay Sometime ago so today I pulled out the whole roof assembly!!!! once the headliner was down, this is a pretty straight forward job, I traced the broken items and just made one roof out the two, that bit wasn’t as nice to do but all turned out fine!

With the frame was back in and adjusted the sliding part of the roof, We had a fully working tilt and slide roof which now has working drains in each corner! Just had to spend this afternoon with a DA getting the sticky of the roof where I had a plastic clear over the roof keeping the water out!!
