Collision assist alert

we have a basic w246 (b class 2015) and have noted that only once, have we heard a warning that we are to close to the car in front, nor has there been any alert when having to stop quickly behind the vehicle in front, also recently we had an alert indicating that sensors are dirty, which raises the question where are the sensors located and how does the system work

A useless feature used as a stepping stone towards the goal of fully autonomous vehicles.
The windscreen should be fully transparent and if it is there should be no need for an assist feature.

If you get it working just forget it's there.
Much better than assuming it actually works, even if it does.
