Dear Forum Members,

I have a DVD COMAND APS system (Navteq NTG-1) installed in an E350 from 2005 and I am very happy with the navigation provided. Does anybody know when/if Speed Camera Locations would become available in this version of the COMAND APS system?

I don't actually have Command, but I didn't think it was possible to have speed camera locations on Command at all. :(

Somebody correct me if I am wrong please.

Not available on any navigation disk at present. Its a function of the data disks supplied by Navteq (using Teleatlas data) that precludes the speed camera's from the disks. It is not a function of the Comand unit.

I did spend some time a while ago, de-ciphering a disk to see if I could change some of the lesser used icons to show speed camera positions instead. Got a little way with it but then became an authorised reseller of the disk so abandoned that!

What a pitty

Thank you GizmoB73, television and Alfie.

What a shame that MB missed this obvious great opportunity to integrate the speed camera locations with the navigation system. Even more so if the positions already are on the Navi DVD (if I understood Alfie's reply correctly). I wonder why MB don't support this?

So now I have to look for a third party solution if I want the camera locations. Any recommendations?

Why waste money on COMAND, get a TOMTOM instead.

Dont think you understood me. the camera positions are not on the disk nor is the icon. It was my intention to upload the positions and an icon but use a 'slot' on the disk for say hotels or something like that and make them have the coordinates of the cameras and change the hotel icon to a camera one.

Its the disks that are missing the data, not the comand or MB!

Yes and have it nicked like lots of others have!

You get what you pay for these days. If you want a silly little screen that attracts thieves to your car then thats what you'll get with a Tom Tom. If you want an integrated navigation/phone/CD/Tv system which enhances your cars value then comand will do that.

You won't get your TomTom nicked unless you leave it in the car, which could be true of anything left in view, like a handbag or jacket etc.

The silly little screened TomTom does everything I want, it shows me the best route, where the speed cameras are located, including mobile camera positions, the nearest cashpoint, tesco, BP garage etc, etc. through the point of interest feature. And I can make and answer hands free calls through the TomTom's bluetooth. The top shelf of the glovebox is a perfect fit for my portable DVD player, which connects to the Aux In socket & plays through the Audio 20. Personally speaking £2000 or whatever for COMAND is on a brand new car is very poor value as all manufacturers sat navs are severly limited compared to TomToms and others.
You pay your money & take your choice.

Does your tom tom have cables trailing across the car. I suspect yes. Does it leave a mark on the windscreen that you have to clean off everytime you leave the car to prevent the thieves from assuming its in the glovebox? I suspect yes. Does it play CD's -No, Does it allow voice input for the destination - I suspect not. does it look good in the car - definately not. Does it have a small hard to see screen - yes. Does it display in the instrument cluster - no.

Comand doesnt have to cost anything like £2,000;)

Yep, you pay your money you take your choice.

Thanks for clarifying this - sounds like an interesting idea.

This is exactly why I had hoped that the COMAND also would support speed camera positions so I only would need one clean and tidy system.

Now it still leaves me with the question what to choose to get the speed camera locations available. As mentioned in another entry MB sells the stylish Road Angel and Road Angel Plus. The first needs a power supply cable whereas the second also can run on a battery some hours. However, the reviews I have seen don't look particular good. Many seem to prefer the much cheaper Talex Lite which also needs power supply cable.

If you wish to go for a detector instead of a GPS position type then the Valentine 1 is about the best. There's also one made by Beltronics which is very good.

The TomTom has no cables trailing across the car as the power supply has been taken from the centre console power point and all cables are hidden behind the console and dash. It also mounts on the centre console on a Brodit Pro Clip, so no marks on the windscreen either, or any obvious sign that a TomTom may be present from outside the car. And surprisingly, it looks OK inside the car too.

Unlike COMAND however, I can download the latest speed camera database from pocket gps world every month, I can download the latest version of the operating system for free from TomTom home, or any of the free POI's available on the internet. I can download the latest map version from TomTom for £30, or view up to date traffic news/hold ups and weather reports. In fact the TOMTOM plus services can do many things that COMAND will never be able to do. And while the TomTom does not play CD's, the audio 20 does, but the latest TomToms do have a MP3 player jukebox and lots of other option mine does not have.

I found Road Angle Plus pretty good

May be I am late in responding and I certainly am no expert. However, Road Angle Plus was in offer in Halfords around a year ago, got it and do like it. A bit of problem, as I can't mount it in the centre of the desh, as it would obscure the park sensor lights.
