COMAND Navigation problem

I have just bought a 2005 (Jan) E320 cdi.

The COMAND APS unit works fine plays mp3s etc. - apart from the navigation.

It seems to start up and says 'Navigation activated. Please wait' - and then continues to show that.

I have deduced that the car is receiving a GPS signal as I cannot adjust the date in the clock or indeed change the clock itself in increments of anything other than 30 mins.

The drive in the boot contains an OEM Comand 4.1 dvd.

Having read the various comand postings, I have ordered the software upgrade disc W211 589 13 22 00 - does anyone know if this will fix the problem?

And should I apply the software update? I am worried about invalidating the remainder of the MB warranty.

Thanks in advance.

Thats how mine started off!! See thread http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=27873 You'll see this has been a long-running and expensive saga and is still not resolved. Fortunately the car is still under warranty.

I've ordered the same CD. It was despatched yesterday, hope to have it with me tomorrow. I'll keep you posted. If it doesn't work the car is booked in next week for further diagnostics.

I read your tale of woe...

I think the part I should have ordered is W220 589 04 22 00 (which I have now ordered as well) which seems to be the update for cars with the nav unit in the boot.

I wonder how long it will take to arrive....ordered from Inchape.

I ordered mine from Inchcape on Saturday and it was despatched yesterday. I ordered it on advice from Alfie, a member who posts on here and is a COMAND guru. Hopefully it will come tomorrow and I'll give it a go.

W220 589 04 22 00 is the latest disk to update the navigation unit in the boot. (E/SLK/CL/CLS/S/S W220)

W211 589 13 22 00 is the latest disk to update the COMAND Head Unit (E/CLS)

Thanks for that.

Do I use both then?

Thanks for this. What's the difference, if you don't mind me asking?

As part of the original 'repair' the garage provided a new SATNAV disc (Navigations-DVD COMAND APS 2007) for the boot. The disc I now have is labelled A211 827 95 59 version 6.0.

As I understand it, the W220 disk updates the navigation software on the unit in the boot.

The W211 disk updates the software on the COMAND Head Unit. The Head Unit displays the Sat Nav info on the screen but it also does 1001 other things which also require updating from time to time - e.g. playback of MP3 files, phone book enteries, etc etc.

To ensure you have all the latest features you should install both software disks and run at least the version 5.1 Map DVD. VERSION 6.0 of the map DVD is available buts its unclear what extra information is on this above 5.1. Most people seem to think its not worth another £250 if you already have 5.1.

Incidently if you have ver 5.0 MB provided a free upgrade to 5.1 - again no one really knows what the difference was - the only thing I found different was updates to the MB dealer POI's

Hope this helps

I'm still waiting for the W211 disc to arrive in the post. Hopefully it will come tomorrow and I'll give it a go.

Went to my local MB dealers this morning.

They had a look and concluded that the Nav unit in the boot is faulty, as it would not play one of their own nav discs.

On another note, my update disc for the head unit arrived W211 589 13 22 00 from inchape.

Going to use it now and see if there is any change.

Wish me luck!

Well all done.

About half way through install it looks for the nav update disc (er, which I don't have yet) and then goes on.

Only difference I have noticed is that mp3's from the cdc now show the title as opposed to the track no. on the instrument cluster.

That seems to be it.

Mine hasn't arrived yet! It was despatched on Tuesday, according to Inchcape. If/when it arrives I'll give it a go.

P.S. I've just noticed I've clocked up my 100th post and become a senior member - only another 14,700 to go to catch up Malcolm!!

No chance - when I last looked you were on exactly 14,800 and now you're on 14,815. It's taken me since Feb 2006 to clock up 100 posts and you've just done 15 in less than a day!! Legend ;)

Will you make 15,000 before you go away? What will we do without you :(

Most that I have done was 70 post in one day, but today there is not much happening, and what I have posted not very important or technical.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how much a boot nav unit would cost to buy?

Thankfully mine, if it needs replaced, will be a warranty job...but I have looked for replacement units on the web and can't seem to find any.

Disc arrived today. I've updated the software but it hasn't cured the problem. Not to worry, it was worth trying and the car is going back into the garage tomorrow for more diagnostics.

Well, got the nav unit software update disc today- 220 589 04 22 00.

However, it directs that I 'disconnect navigation unit or pull fuse and reset' to start with.

Well I dont know how to disconnect the unit, and I don't want to start pulling everything apart.

And where is the fuse? There is a fuse array beside the unit which is covered by a plastic grid which I can't seem to remove - is it in there perhaps.

My manual states that the main fuse panel is at the left of the dash at the side, for the life of me I can't seem to be able to pop it off - and am fearful of breaking it...

If anyone can steer me in the right direction, I would be most appreciative..
