Hi,

I've been happily using the satnav in my e320 for almost a year without issues. Then about 3 weeks ago the display showed my position was parallel to the road I was on and as a result it wouldn't give me directions. If I hadn't had satnav on my mobile phone, I would have had a real problem. The next day it worked fine.

A week went by, and then it did it again, but only briefly. I have had the latest updates and have the 2014 maps etc. My concern is that I'm starting not to trust it and I'm going to need to use it in France in June.

Any ideas?

Possible GPS antenna fault, not easy in the early stages.

Other times they can do this when the maps are not updated, or on a new road or road change, A 2014 map does not guarantee that it is up to date everywhere.

A150 manual, smart forTwo, W205 AMG line premium plus.
Occasionally they do this when there is limited GPS coverage. My car does this occasionally and yes it is annoying.

As you have 2014 maps you almost certainly have the up to date firmware aswell.

Is your E class the W211 with NTG 2.5 or the W212 with NTG4?

I wasn't on a new road by any means so that wasn't the issue I don't think.

re what version of Command etc, I have no idea, where do I find that out from? All I know is that it is a Jan 2009 model?

I would think a NGT4 on that car.

Jan 2009 must be a W211. W212 only started in LHD in March 2009. So can not be NTG4 as NTG4 was a W212 thing as Alfie mentioned.

Its highly likely to be NTG2.5 (unless it has sat in stock for 6 months then it would be NTG1).

How do I find out which version, and why does it matter with the issue that I have?

No it does not really matter, you have the latest maps, if done at a Mercedes garage I would presume that they did any software updates. All I can think of is to get the car on STAR and see if any errors reported, its very hard to know if the system just froze for a second or two, or if the antenna has a problem.

Yes it was all updated by Mercedes. The first time it was like it for my whole journey which was 30 mins or so. The second time it was only for 3 or 4 mins. But the inconsistency of it bothers me, especially since I'm going to be in France.

Normally if the antenna goes down the car thinks you are somewhere about 40 miles from where you are. You have the little window that tells you how many satellites you are picking up.
