Hi, hope this is in the right place, but i've just bought a E220 and we're trying to get to grips with the COMMAND unit. we're due to go back to the dealer later to be talked through some functions, can anyone suggest things we should/will need to know that they might not mention? Also, can i put any SD card into the system?

thanks

Well they arent going to go through every function or they will be there all day, so ask about what you want to know. It is all explained in the Comand manual and TBH if you want to know how to use it properly and all the different functions your going to have to read the manual yourself, no way round it.

And best to keep the books in the little room and pick it up and read it every visit till it has all sunk in, then in between you can run down to the car and try it out.
Do not play for hours or the battery will go flat on the car.

But wash your hands first....;)

If it was me, I would ask them to show me a couple of key things which might not be so obvious depending on my previous in-car equipment.

For example, I would rather they showed me how to set the SatNav to guide me to say a friend and relative (and to store that as a favourite destination), than to show me how to adjust the volume or tune the radio.

I would rather they showed me how to dial the phone from the Comand/Steering wheel controls than to show me how to skip tracks on a CD.

So, maybe you should have a quick scan of the manual to find out some of the capabilities you have not had in a previous car and ask them to demonstrate those.

Good luck, and enjoy the new car.

They should have a separate detailed manual for Comand. Not just half a dozen pages giving skimpy instructions in the main manual.

My SL came with a Comand user manual which is just as thick as the comprehensive car user guide. Has that changed now?

I also downloaded both manuals from the Mercedes US site and sent them as PDF files to my Kindle so I could read them when I was away on holiday. Even now, I have to admit that there are some things I would have to read again to find out how to do.

Seemingly so - I don't have a paper manual.

Ah good thinking. I downloaded the main manual from the US site before I even got the car so that I would be hitting the ground running as it were.

Regarding your SD card question, in theory you can use any sd card up to 32gb.

However when I queried whether all cards would work with MB Customer Services, the official answer was "we don't know if all cards will work, you'll just have to buy one and try it"!

So I bought one a 32gb card from Amazon so that I could send it back if it didn't work, but it was fine.

I image that most, if not all SD and SDHC cards would be okay provided they are formatted to fat32 rather than NTFS or another filesystem which may not compatible with Mercedes Comand.

So if an SD card appeared not to be compatible, try re-formatting it to fat32 in a PC and then adding a couple of MP3 tracks to test.

I have a different setup (Audio 20 + Becker Pilot) so not strictly relevant perhaps, but I found that my biggest confusion was over connecting external equipment. As in, how to get my phone to connect (Bluetooth or cradle or convenience phone or whatever), and how to get music from my phone and/or iPod (again there's Bluetooth and a USB connection and 3.5mm jack, and they all seem to support different functions). The manual isn't always very clear, especially when it doesn't distinguish between standard features and optional ones (ie. you don't necessarily even know what your car actually has and what it doesn't), so you may want someone to talk you through the options.

That seems entirely reasonable, no way could they test them all,but ones from main stream makers should be OK. My now 2 year old car came with a very thick book on Comand, have they now stopped doing it?
