Hi.

I probably should have checked in with you guys before bidding, but it was a bit of a last minute.com type of situation.

It's a stolen/recovered. I've run the HPI and it comes back totally clear. If that is the case, why did he not advertise it as a 'straight' sale? All the keys and docs are there.

Is there something that I'm missing? Is there anything specific I should check before I hand over the cash tomorrow?

All advice/abuse gratefully received.

All I can think of is that the trader deals in insurance write offs one might wonder how he has got hold of it, if the car had not been found before the, the replacement was issued, the insurance company would sell it off

Can they prove it was stolen and recovered?
I would be worried it had been in the recent floods, can you check for signs of any water damage, it would be easy to dry out, but the electrics will probably start playing up if they have been soaked.
Other than that, it is hard to tell from a photo if it has any problems, best go and look.

Surely, then, it would be recorded. Under what circumstances would a stolen recovered vehicle not be recorded.

Only when damaged, not otherwise if not damaged

Thank you for your replies.

Is there a sure fire way of checking for flood damage?

I'm still a little unclear as to the legal status of this car if I decided to sell it on later. Would I have to announce the stolen/recovered bit if the HPI is clean?

No sir you would not have to say, its worth the £33 to have it checked, they will tell you if it was stolen

It sounds petty, but I am always wary of poor spelling and grammar in eBay listings...

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
They seem to have sold other cars as stolen / recovered, but unrecorded. I don't really understand the system, but on the face of it that seems strange.

They do have a nice looking place, and some decent cars in the background. Their eBay feedback is perfect - although the dodgy spelling really grates, but doesn't seem unusual these days!

T212 facelift, 2013. A few toys including pan roof, 19" rims, Harmon Kardon, nappa, privacy glass.
Not sure if it's valid, but I do not believe they are the original Avantgarde wheels for that year. Are they not from an Elegance ??

Many dealers in scrap etc are not the brightest buttons in the book, but they know how to make money, as you say, not unusual these days

Thank you Malcolm, you've been very helpful.

Interesting note about the possibility of wrong wheels. I'll investigate that a little further.

Regarding the spelling and grammar, I've stopped taking notice of it on eBay, especially from the motor trade. I do wonder if other European countries have similar standards of their written language.

America does of course, but that's only to be expected.

I do not profess to be perfect by any means, but at least I'm close. I think.

The wheels do appear to be those of the Elegance model.

Was it possible to choose different wheels when ordering?

you can ring dvla and they are can be helpfull explaining the differant catogries that cars may come under! the other place you can ask is VOSA,these are the people that now inspect cars that have been insurance write offs before a log book is reissued, your own insurance company may be able to help(depending on the company,if they can be botherd) as they have access the the insurance data base, you can pay for a vehicle check as another option.as for flood damage, what does the car smell like!,it may smell of pond water or be over scented to hide the smell,we all should know what a car normally smells like, leather for example!,also modern day engines do not like water, even moor so if its sucked it in!,as for comments on spelling,i spent 20 years in the moter trade and due to the fact you do not need to write that often you tend to loose some of your grammer skills,(i have a BTEC in moter vehicle tech and science and 3D engine design before any one makes a comment,) so does the grammer skills make me a dodgy person!!!!,

The Avantgarde wheels are very dated now IMHO. Someone had taste and it's the 7 seater. Very desireable, infact I thought it was mine until I saw the mileage.

P.S. You can run an HPI check through eBay for £6. I have in the past.

It ain't a cdi

It's advertised as a 320cdi avantgarde. As you've noticed, it's sitting on elegance wheels. The dash cluster is black, not grey (elegance again). The engine is a V6 and there is no cdi badge on the back- so its an E320 petrol elegance. (Backed up by the RAC data check).
Still good value at £4k.

Its always worthwhile really READING the wording in an ebay listing. PROPERLY - all the the way through.

In particular, with this seller it states near the end of listing........"There is no guarantee on discription or milage of the vehicles,"...........

In other words, everything that is written about this car could all be a complete fabrication.

However, £4g is a good price, providing its not a back street cut'n'shut or something similar (it still happens). I would get it inspected professionally before parting with any money.
But thats just my personal opinion...................
