Hi Everyone
Wondered if anyone could help give me answers to my concerns I have with my E220
My car is a 2016 E220 Bluetec with the Adblue system..it is running absolutely fine just sailed through the MOT with no issues or advisories or anything..but ... my concerns are ...I’m not really using it at all and it is spending most of its time sat in the garage doing nothing ..I have recently read reports about the Adblue system causing damage to various Nox systems and filters etc due to crystallising and subsequently causing huge repair bills ...
So ... do you think this is an accident waiting to happen with my car due to it not being used OR am I worrying for nothing and it’ll be absolutely fine ..?
This is real point of concern for me because last thing I want is to have a problem .....and with it being such a nice car that I would rather sell it and let someone be using it than it being sat idle and doing nothing..
I would think the maximum miles I am doing each year now is 3000/5000 at the most ..
Thanks for any advice
Regards
Mark

With that mileage I’d look at replacing it with a petrol, whilst prices for Euro 6 Diesels are still strong

I have the exact same car, E220 2016. Absolutely love it. If you’re worried, possibly get a small Pela oil pump (or similar) for £20/30, siphon out the AdBlue and refill with fresh?

I’m considering this myself as I am doing similar mileage to yourself due to reduced travelling since covid.

Maybe others can comment.

What colour is your E220?

Horses for courses, 3k miles a year is more suited to an EV

For that mileage, I'd second Blobcat with a vote for good old fashioned petrol.

If I had to go down a hybrid route, I'd be looking at Lexus offering.

I've done 9000m in 9 months in my electric car and whilst hybrid is fine once you have gone full electric you won't go back.

Or as Blobcat is about to recommend..... v8 petrol!

Personally, I'd choose either 100% petrol or 100% diesel...for some reason, I'm not attracted to hybrids in any shape or form. Seems to me that the more complicated the engine, the more there is to go wrong.

Having run petrol, diesel, serial hybrids. Plug in hybrids and full electric I am perhaps qualified to make a comment / view?

Petrol / diesel are now as they ever were. Diesel is now regarded (wrongly) as the fuel of Satan, and you are seeing dramatic drops in values as dealers struggle to shift them. Due to DPF's and so on, I struggle to recommend for low miles users..

Petrol is fine - but its the next on the "hit list" - in as little as 5 years they will become the diesel of today. But they work for shorter trips / lower miles fine.

mHev tech is a waste of time. It drops CO2 on the govt cycle so is good for manufacturers but does little or nothing for owners.

Serial / "self charging" hybrids is fine and recovers some lost energy, thus decent figures are achievable - but if you want that by a Toyota or Korean car as they have got it right.

PHEV - are brilliant provided you fit the profile. If 90% of your driving days are less than 30m in total they work really well, if you pound the motorway they don't. Your mileage stated suggest low miles but that doesn't tell us if its lots of short trips (PHEV perfect) or infrequent long ones (diesel better). You also need to check the car WILL do 30m rather than just " claimed". book a demo, make sure battery is full. Drive till it runs out. At 16 degrees outside it will have its longest range, sub 5 degrees its shortest, bear that in mind when you drive it.

Full electric. I wont bang on about it too much, but as long as the ACTUAL range achievable (not claimed) is over 250m then Battery EV just works now. I have done 9months in mine, 9000m and spent £20 in electricity. There are (to me) no downsides except initial purchase price. 2 years ago BEV cars were under 1% of cars sold - now its 7% - that growth can't be ignored. At work at least 20% of enquiries are for full electric cars and we dont even make one! Like it or not, in 5 years time it will be what 80% of people want to buy, so you are probably better putting your money in that than something else.

And before anyone says it, Bristol to Scotland is perfectly possible, even easy - so long trips are not a problem in them, even now and that is improving rapidly. And range anxiety doesn't exist in the new cars, a 10 year old leaf it still does!

More than interesting. Get one now before they find a way to tax them out of existence.

I do think New V8's will die in next 5 yrs, I dont know if they will ban older ones - been no efforts so far - they are ULEZ compliant!
