Hi,

New member thinking of buying E320 Elegance Auto N reg June 1996. This has a WDB 210 chassis no. I thiught this would be a V6 engine with a 5 speed auto box.

I had a specialist check the chassis number and he says this is in fact a Straight 6 104 engine and a 4 speed box.

Any help appreciated as this will be my first MB purchase.

If you have the full vin (chassis) number goto this site
http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/code/?lng=eng
, plug in the number and it will give you the options that your car was shipped with. If you are in the car, get out the owners service record book, go the the last page and on teh blue sheet it will give you the VIN number, engine number and auto box number. Do a google or a search here on the number and yuou will find more info.

On the subject of manuals, there isn't one (eg a haynes one) but there are a number ofpeople selling DVD/CD versions on Ebay. I have one of these (WIS/ASRA) and while it isn't the most user friendly, it does work and you can get good info on a very wide range of models.

Just split this away from the other post BC.

I am pretty sure that the V6 engines (E240 & E320) were introduced in early 98, and the 5sp Auto became standard auto.

I do see some advertisers on autotrader selling 96 V6's. I think they are mistaken. Also there are some selling 96 E280 V6's.
I think the 320 V6 was first seen in the CLK.

If you put the chassis no. in link below, you will get all the details. The V6 engines start with the prefix: M112

Immobiliser on E329 Auto Elegance 1996 N

Many thanks to Woodturner Fran & Pascal.

All is now clear on models. Intend to buy the 320 Auto Elegance 1996 N reg.

Friend has asked me if it has the special key to disable the immobiliser should that goes wrong. He said that this key is irreplacable and the only alternative is an expensive rewiring job. Any comments much appreciated.

I dont know about being irreplacable. It is a scorpion alarm system that worked in conjuntion with the MB imobilizer. The red keys, program the black ones, which you only need to use if there is an alarm prob. there is a time/amount of times you can re-program new keys.
