229.5 or 229.51 is the usual default for MBs.
I would always use the latest spec oil that's compatible. I wouldn't be tempted to use 229.1 as that's more for 1990s cars.

mine is a 2002 seen this and others /for 05.2000/ 2007 -

  • Oil: Mineral Oil
  • Specification: ACEA A3, ACEA B3, API SL, API CF
  • Manufacturer Release: MB 229.1, VW 501 01, VW 505 00
  • Condition:
  • recommended seems to be 229'1 to 229.3 syn
  • 229.5 or 229.51 is that not for newer mbs with dpf

found the manual says 229.1 does not say min /syn /fully syn some site say min or syn , to 229.3 i have no dpf on my2002 cdi220 and i have read 2293 is low ash for dpf
so im thinking semisyn 229.1- 5w30 would be optimum for the old girl

229.5 is what we use in petrols.
229.5 supercessedes 229.3, which superceedes 229.1, each spec is a better version of the previous.

The .1 versions, are low ash for diesels with DPF's. EG 229.31 and 229.51. They can be used in petrols, but are a lower viscocity and I prefer to use the thicker oils. In AMG's the thinner versions of 229.51 are not allowed.

Just because it's for DPF equipped cars doesn't mean it can't be used in non DPF cars.
DPF approved oils just have a slightly different formulation to prevent causing issues in the DPF itself.
You can even use 229.51 in petrol engines.

Same with VAG , with the dual 504.00 507.00 specification .

From 1.0 3 cylinder petrol to any diesel and RS monsters .

A one stop Universal oil .

have been reading post from 2014 .specs have changed a lot . still the same discussion and confusion seems worse with the advent of dpf and totally contradictory

so it seems dpf or not.51/52

mostly my concerns were to much cleaner in the oil and the wrong oil clogging egr .dpf .but seeing as the 02 203 cdi and the 05 clk .270 dont appear to have dpf seems much any mb spec will do stated for the non dpf

Basically you can use 229.51 for pretty much anything aside from very latest.
You can't use 229.5 in anything with a DPF. Same goes for 229.3 and 229.1 as well.

I don't get why you're so hung up on this. Oils improve with development so why not use the latest spec available for your car? Just use 229.51 same as a dealer would.

this why / as said previous post does seem contradictory when my specs say other
228.5 is best for a non dpf diesel (being a diesel specific oil), followed by 229.5 (petrol/diesel). The 22x.3 oils should be avoided if you are using assyst intervals. And with no dpf, the 22x.x1 oils should also be avoided because they have less of the good stuff in them (good stuff in terms of engine wear, but the good stuff clogs dpfs).

In order, best to worst (for non dpf)...
228.5 > 229.5 > 228.51 > 229.51 > 228.3 > 228.31 > 229.3 > 229.31

For dpf you need to stick with a .x1 oil, the order is the same.

/As long as it meets spec 229.3 you are fine, most use a 05W 40/Should not that be 229.5 and the latest version for DPF cars

and my om6 hated semi where 190e loved it

22x.x1 has a different additive pack to overcome the missing SAPS components to give equivalent wear resistance.
I do think you're over thinking this.
