Hi all,

Starting to consider a Mercedes W177 A-Class, the Facelift in 1.3 Petrol form.
Currently just browsing and seen an SE in auto.

What are the common things to look out for on these?
Are they cambelt or chain fitted?
What are the servicing intervals?

Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Depends on your point of view of course but the A class 1.3 petrol has a Renault derived engine so I wouldn’t buy one. I think they do offer a Mercedes built engine in some of the A class models

As above. If renault engine it is not a mercedes.

Mercedes integrates Renault engines primarily in its entry-level models. These include the A-Class, B-Class, CLA, and GLA. The engines used in these models are typically up to the 200 designation, including popular Renault engine blocks such as the 1.5 DCi, 1.6 DCi, 2.0 DCi, 2.3 DCi, and 1.3 TCe.7 Sept 2024.

Yep....not very useful!!

We need a small engine, petrol, hence looking at the 1.3. Not much choice really.

Looking at 19/20'ish.
What engine do you have?

I'm not a fan of black cars, so would look at anything else really.

What does 200 designation mean?
Problem is with us needing a small engine in petrol, 1.3 is really the only fit.

M282 engine which I believe is the Renault/merc engine. That’s gone now and she now has no engine just a big ole Duracell Eqa

I'm pretty sure our previous A180 had a Renault engine and never had any issues with it in the 6yrs we owned it, although the one we had did have a cambelt, not sure if that's because it was a pre face lift model though. We currently have an A250 so it has a Mercedes engine I believe, nice fast car, costs a lot to run though. I think the service intervals are all every year, small A Service one year, bigger B Service the next year. I prefer the facelift model as the shape of the boot makes it easier to get things in and out. Not too keen on how the back doors are though as the shape of them makes it harder to get out than the bigger models.

From looking at these as an option for someone myself, they're fine.

The 1.3T is fine (better in 160bhp '200' guise)
Cylinder shutdown works well and the post facelift 2019 onwards ones are sharper, with better interiors (and no tablet glued to the dash)

Perfectly fine around town and on a short motorway blast we tried, it held its own, although it wasn't fully loaded.

It's not an unreliable engine and it's in many cars.
Yes it's co developed (pretty much bought) from Renault, but it's usually the electricals on French cars that go on strike.....
