We sold our Mercedes back in February and I sent off the tax disc as it had another 3mths on it and also the bit that you send to the DVLA to say you have sold the car.

Today I received a 'Failure to relicense vehicle' fine of £31.67 because I didn't renew the license. The phone number on the paperwork doesn't work so I've not been able to talk to anyone. I did phone another number but they said they couldn't help me.

As I never got the refund on the tax back, in fact I had totally forgotten about it, I am assuming my letter to them got lost. I didn't send it recorded or anything as it didn't occur to me.

I am pretty cross as I've lost 3mths of a tax refund, whatever that would have been, and got a fine too

When you sold the vehicle did you fill out and send off the V5 document. It looks as iff the new owner has not registered the vehicle in their name

We part exchanged the car and I thought I had sent off the V5, but to be honest I could be wrong. My partner thinks the trader would have sent it in and I have to say I've traded cards in before and never had to send anything off to the DVLA. I've looked through all the paperwork for the car and there's no paperwork relating to the Mercedes, and I am guessing the trader would have given us the bit that we had to send off

We did notice the trader took ages to sell the Mercedes on, so I guess it wasn't taxed again for a few weeks, but it still makes no sense to me as they are saying it's relating to 7th February onwards, but the tax disc that we took off ran till the end of April and as we never got a refund on it I don't know why they are using that date :-?

Sounds like the dealer didnt sell it for a while so there part of the v5 wouldnt go until it was sold. The v5 form can be very confusing, but it is still your responsibilty to send your bit off to say it is sold.
Hope you manage to sort the issue out.

John

OH has done the necessary with the 9 months remaining tax on the written off ML. We've just had some sordid little reminder about something or other - I got a black marker pen and wrote on the letter 'please send the outstanding license duty within today'.

Photocopied the letter twice, stuck it together fed into fax taped it up (to form a loop) and left it going round and round for about five mins.

Hopefully they will get the message.
