Check your coolant level and your washer fluid level, a slight low level will but the light on without any deprementral effect. If levels ok most likely one of the sensors is faulty, they are wired in series.

The coolant light on my ML was randomly coming on for no apparent reason, the coolant and washer levels were fine.........the light would stay on for perhaps 2 or 3 minutes or much longer and then go off and then might come on again after 5 mins or 1 hour or whatever...the odd thing was that while the light was on the heated seats wouldnt work!...the seat indicator led's would flash for a few seconds and then turn themselves off.

It turned out to be the (engine) fan control unit was faulty.....the new unit came complete with the large engine cooling fan and control unit which are not separable. (not cheap!)

I know yours isnt an ML but the electrics/cooling systems are probably similar.......does your have a large single cooling fan with an alloy box that contains the electronics directly above and to the left of the fan?..............
