A fan is making a humming noise in the engine bay. It is the large, visible fan and seems to come on and off when the climate control is switched on and off.

Seems to be working ok and hopefully the humming noise will go on its own accord. I assumed this large fan was the radiator cooling fan? If not, out of interest, where is the cooling fan as can' see it!

Can anyone explain for me?

thanks

It is the cooling fan and is electronically controlled ..well engine temp controls it ..it is possible a leaf or piece of debris has lodged between the housing and the fan causing the humming noise,,

this makes sense but how comes it seemed to react to the climate control on/off button? When I switched the climate system off the fan stopped and vice versa?

Its all to do with heat etc, the car knows that the aircon will need the cooling and turns it on. there are different arrangements on different cars, The cars that have multiple fans like a visco plus 2 rad fans behave differently

thanks Malcolm, so does my S class just have the one, electronically controlled fan which does the engine cooling and looks after the air con as well? There is not a 2nd rad and fan for the air con?
