Does anyone know what does the fault code shown on the dashboard of the spanner and -38 beside it means alsoa clock symbol within the same display. It then disappears after a couple seconds. This is on a 99' C200 auto. I dont kno if it is this causing the cooling fan to run on permanently from when the ignition is switched on. The engine isnt even appearing to overheat at all. What also happens is that it is making the low coolant level light come on. But I even changed the low coolant level sensor and the same thing. All fuses are ok.
ONe thing I found strange was changing the low coolant sensor, no coolant came out, I would hve thought it was actually immensed in coolant (unless there is a hidden blockage I cant see).
Do you think it would be worth changing the fan control module?

The -38 was 38 days past service.

I found out the solution to this problem last year in July 2011 after nearly 6 years. I forgot to post it here. I had buy one of those diagnostic machines from China Anyways here goes ....

The problem is due to when changing the electronic ignition switch, which I changed in 2005 due to the old one stopped working. The coding in the menu needs to be changed with DAS on the computer. If this is not done the fan module does not seem to know what the car is hence why it turns on full speed as a precaution.

To access this, you in DAS, after running a test. Go to EZS Electronic Ignition Switch - ELCODE.

In EZS functions menu, go to option 5 being Control module adaptations.

next in the CM adaptations in the EZS select option 2 being read/change coding

In Read/Change coding in the EZS now it may show vehicle model as unkown, model as LHS.

This needs to be changed by entering them and changing 01 to W202 if you have the saloon and S202 if you have an estate.

The second would be to change in 02, option 2 being Right hand steering.
