Hi All.
I am a new member and looking for some advise.
My viano reached red light temperature (I stopped and switched off engine straight away)last week on the motorway and to cut a long story short I have had the following work carried out but today temp gauage still reached over 100 degrees.
New thermostat fitted - no change
New water pump fitted- no change
New expansion tank cap fitted as old one was not locking in the correct position. The old one would tighten but the handle on it was not level.
Since the original problem I have been able to maintain an engine temp of about 80 degrees by turning the heating up!
Pressure test on cooling system was fine.
Any ideas of where to go next would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Squeeze the top radiator hose.
Then start the engine, leave it three or so minutes and squeeze the hose again.
If it's rock hard the cooling system is pressurised suggesting head gasket or cracked head.

Hi.
Thanks for fast response.
The RAC man did a pressure check on the cooling system to 140 PSI and it held well. Does that not rule out your possible diagnosis?

Cylinder pressure is in excess of 400psi. No, it doesn't rule it out.

Doubt it was 140psi it would of blown the radiator hoses apart.
More than likely 14psi.

Did you lose coolant when it first happened.
May be wise to get a sniff test done to check for Head Gasket.

Coolant level is fine. I will investigate the head gasket option. The car drives complete normally except for the temperature issue. No sign of contaminated coolent or white exhaust.
In the mean time would a badly fitting expansion tank cap cause an issue?
Would a radiator flush be a good idea?
The car has 240000 miles and is serviced on a very regular basis.
Thanks.
