Have a 2002 2.2 cdi E class Avantgarde Automatic Saloon. Done 110k miles.
My regular machanic tell me to use 20-40 semi-synthetic oil , due to age/mileage.
I do not have a workshop manual etc. so do not know the recommended oil for this model - but I suspect it would be fully synthetic 5-40 or similar....

What is the CORRECT recommended oil for this model.

Should I only use the recommended oil or is there any benefit/harm in using semi-synthetic??

You are correct..
Use something like Castrol edge 5-40 or Mobil 1 5-40 Diesel..

The main thing to check is the specifications of the oil on the back of the can..
229.3 or 229.5
229.5 is the highest spec and intended for long change intervals..

You can use the spec that says 229.31 or 229.51.. The "1" at the end of the spec number means its a Low ash oil that can be used for cars with DPF fitted. (DPF is Diesel Particulate Filter)..
I suspect your car will be blessed by not having such a contraption fitted !!

I tend to molly coddle my engine and only use synthetic oils..
You can use a semi synthetic but if I were you I would change the oil more often in that case.

Try typing your REG No in here:

I would find yourself a new mechanic that knows what he is talking about.

As above, any oil that meets MB229.1, 229.3 or 229.5 will be fine.

I wouldn't run 20w 40 though.

5w30, 0w40, 5w40 or 10w40 will be fine.

my c class has the same engine and has always had castrol magnatec 10w40 semi synthetic (meets MB229.1 spec) and has had no issues and only serviced when ASSYST asks for it.

Thanks. My mistake - it is not 20w 40. It should read 10W40 semi-synthetic.
