Hello,

Could anyone tell me:
  • what the correct wheel nuts are for my car (52-reg 320 Diesel estate; 235/45 R17, 8J x 17)
    • I don't seem to be able to find ones with the right length; most offered on, for example, E-Bay mention a thread length of 20mm or so but mine are about twice as long
    • In case that makes a difference, I am NOT talking lock nuts but ordinary wheel nuts
  • what the correct torque setting is for them
  • can I use copper grease on wheel nuts to prevent them from rusting in
Many thanks for your advice

If its a W210 then yours are M12 threaded and will be about 30mm or 40mm thread length.
Put an existing bolt through the wheel. You need 10mm to poke through so work that out from the existing bolt length.

If its a W211 then they will be M14 threaded and 20mm or so threaded.
I'm guessing you're looking at the W211 ones as 2002 was the change over year.

Try looking for 2000/2001 ones.
You should never copperslip a wheel bolt.

Be careful buying wheel bolts from eBay. You need to ensure they have a radius bolt head and not a tapered head. You'll have serious problems if you fit tapered bolts.

If you have the older W210 you need M12 Bolts 39mm long, the later W211 uses M14 bolts 27mm long.
You can get the correct bolt packs here. They aren't cheap but you can be sure they will be the correct ones.

Re JBell and LostKiwi's comments on copperslip on wheel bolts, I have always applied a smear of grease to wheel bolts, I have not used copperslip but generally use whatever grease comes to hand.

What are the downsides to this please. I've never lost (or had a stud loosen) any bolts but now wondering if there are errors in my ways.

Using copper grease or grease will give an artificial reading on the torque wrench where the actual torque applied will be much higher than desired which can cause cracking of alloys.

Correct ..... but ..... there's nothing worse than rusty nuts
Seriously, I'd prefer a wipe of grease on a wheel bolt than struggle to remove a rusted in bolt :) The bore on my wheels get a smear of grease too .... I've helped remove other peoples wheels when they've welded themselves to the hub.

P.S. What's a torque wrench?

Bang on.

I have never had a wheel bolt stick in the hub, some are harder to remove but this is usually due to overtightening and not using a torque wrench when fitting.

I sold wheels and tyres for 5 years and EVERY manufacturer said don't put anything on the bolts

Have used copperslip for decades here and overseas and never had problem.

Dear All,

many thanks for your replies. They help a lot. All I need to find out now is whether it is a W210 or W211 and the torque setting.

Look at the VIN number - the first three numbers after the 3 letters will be the model, the next three the sub model.

For example WDB129067F2xxxxxx would break down to:
WDB - Germany, Daimler Benz
129 - r129 Mercedes SL
067 - V8 model with distributors and electronic fuel injection
F - Manufacture plant (Bremen)
2 - Right hand steering
xxxxxx - chassis number.
