Hi Folks, We have a 51 plate 320 SLK.
Ive found it has some rust on all 4 wheel arches + the boot lid area.
How good is the 8 year Merc warranty.

Does the car need to have been serviced at a Merc dealership to qualify for the "remedial" work to be completed.??
I realise there is a rust thread, but as its in excess of 13 pages long, + not particularly specific,i thought ide start a new one....
Cheers.

if the rust has come from BEHIND!!! and i use that word lightly, then your car should be covered, the dealers will test the thickness of the paint to make sure its not been painted by some back street place, but i do belive you need full dealer history, dont quote me there but belive thats the basics.

just taken my 2000 s class in for rust warranty on rear arches and they will take a copy of your service book, check paint thickness and take pictures which then get sent to MB head office.the anti corrosion warranty(i've been told)covers panels which are rusting from behind the paint for upto 8 years. It's a tricky one,30 years????8 years?????HMMMM
Best take it to your local dealer and see what they say,but stand your ground, argue the 30 year point and see what they say,BUT they may be more than helpfull with no problems.if your not happy with that dealer ,go to another and so on.

as said, take it in. I'd be surprised if they didn't sort it for you, provided it hasn't been painted before. They are normally pretty good and certainly within 8 years, fmbsh isn't essential in my experience.

I know you didn't want to trawl a 13 page post so excuse me if I repeat myself.

My E300TD was main dealer serviced 4 times in 4 years and 80,000 miles (Yes, every 20,000 miles - hardly the recommended interval eh?)

Then I bought it and had it serviced by a local specialist.

The first time I went in for rust warranty work they did the work with no argument.
Second time: Again no question.
Third time: By now my car had reached 9 years old so they initially said no. I made a comment that had the work been done properly the first time etc. then I wouldn't be back with more problems. They came back with a 50% offer, which I accepted.

In my experience you will have no problems getting the work done for free on a 7 year old car, but be prepaired to persevere, nicely.

No problems at 6 years with rust appearing as bubbles around rear wndow on SLK 230 - window replaced by MB dealer when car almost new and they damaged the primer etc inside. Cost over £1500 according to MB shop to correct, done without question, but I do have a full MBSH. They also dealt with a load of little chips etc (not MB issues) at the same time for free. Certainly encourages me to keep MB service going.

My s class went back to MB to have the two rear 1/4 repaired again(only lasted 16 months) the rust on the roof has been ok'ed by MB for repair and respray but wont do the front 1/4's,because they have been resprayed by someone else,so i have to pay for those. At a cost of £1500.So one 8 year old S class has now had two rear 1/4's two new front 1/4's and it's roof repaired and resprayed.where will it end????????????????
