No HiD kit that utilises the halogen headlamp unit is legal and technically it should fail the new MoT regs. But ....

In theory you are correct. But in practice, as you suggest, this does not happen. My local MOT tester told me he would only fail if beam pattern was incorrect, and he in fact had HID kits on his own cars. I think most of them just take a common sense approach.

And fitted correctly they make a huge difference to the ease and safety of driving at night, very worth while if your doing high mileages at night.

That's exactly what I have to do a lot of. Maybe I need some MOT free night vision goggles LOL

Why not try the Osram Nightbreaker plus bulbs, they could surprise you and very cheap on Ebay

Another vote for Osram Nightbreaker plus bulbs. Not Xenon good, but miles better than the ones that come standard and give plenty illumination.

In my 140 it made enough difference so that I could see what I would have hit.. it takes away the shock element when you do not know whats happened.

I recall having extra bright bulbs in the past in my VW Sharan and remember both bulbs didn't last that long, what about these ones?

They do not last as long as standard bulbs but they do last a fair time
