Could I have a MAF problem brewing?

I've read some previous posts about MAF problems and wonder if I've got the early stages of this on my R129.....the performance is quite sluggish until I hit 4000rpm and then the power all comes through in one big surge. I've also noticed a slight whine (almost like turbo whine) on cold starts, which goes up and down with the engine revs. It goes away when the engine is warm

Any thoughts?

Try it with the MAF unplugged and see how it goes
