Can anybody assist

I have an A210L automatic year 2002 and it failed its MTO today because of cracked Alloys.

Both the front wheels and the rear nearside have cracked

Mercedes no not want to know - as the alloys are under warranty for only 2 years.

My car is now sitting at Mercedes waiting for replacement wheels to arrive and them wanting me to return my loan car as well as wanting £230 plus VAT for each wheel.

Tyres have recently been replaced - no cracking noted then. Do not want to change to other alloys - as the AMG's were a factory option when I purchased the car

help please

do you wheels have any kerb damage??

Where are the cracks on the wheels, I had some cheap wheels on a SAAB that cracked, are your wheels gen AMG or fakes?

thanks for the quick reply

Normal kerbing - on passenger nearside

cracks are visible on the rim

Expensive factory option - I think an additional £1100

I think if the wheels where in un kerbed condition MB wouldnt make a fuss and would replace them. Kerb damage can be difficult to assess, is there any tyre damage, buldges in the tyre wall or chunks missing from the tyre wall?

I would have a word with a wheel re finishing firm like pristine wheels to see if it is only a problem for those wheels, Pristine wheels do the re con for MB

A210 cracked wheels

My A210 failed mot also - I am on 3rd set of wheels all of which cracked. This is a mystery to me as I only use the car to collect kids, drive really slowly, don't remember any potholes, kerbs etc. What else could be the cause of this problem.

Hamfisted tyre changers and/or incorrect equipment used during tyre changes.

Also, if the tyres are of the ultra low profile variety bear in mind that more of any impact, even in day to day driving, will be transmitted through to your rim as there's less sidewall to absorb the impact. One of the reasons I ditched the runflats on my other car, three rims and four tyres replaced, all before their time and all through impact damage. I don't believe MB forced that option on their customers but could be wrong?

The crack can be cut out and then welded, we do about 10 wheels a week.

Probably the weight the car had to carry in the driver's seat.

We had a Rover 820 Turbo in as a demonstrator when I worked in South Wales, it required 4 new wheels within the first half hour "test" drive as the driver managed to crack all 4 in "normal" driving.

I wouldn't mind hearing more about that, still have mine kicking around somewhere. I always thought repairing them was a no-no?

If just the crack is welded then it would creep, this is why it needs to be cut out and welded to aircraft standard. Some of the BMW wheels we see have two or three cracks and there still perfectly safe to repair.
