Front NS door started to 'creak' whenever it was opened or closed. Lubricated hinges, retainer strap etc still no difference.

Checked the fixing screws/bolts nothing appeared loose etc then went over the hinge bolts and the strap retaining set screws with a spanner here was the problem - whilst the two strap retaining screws were 'tight' they were not tight up to the door itself, why I do not know but after slowly tightening both set screws the creak stopped.

I was reluctant to remove the screws in case the threads were damaged and could not get them back in, no doubt one day my inquisitive nature will get the better of me:)

Often when one is nervous about what these things are that are creaking, if you put your finger on the item you can feel what ever it is with the vibration through your finger as it creaks.

Nice though when the noise stops :-D:-D

I had the same problem. It was the check strap but spray oil/grease had no immediate affect . It did eventually go though. It may take time for the lubricants to do their thing.

Lithium Grease

I've also had a couple of doors become stiff and creaking. I spayed them with lithium grease it did not work immediately but it worked itself out as the grease penetrated into the dry areas.

But I would suggest using lithium instead of a penetrating oil the results will last a lot longer. :D

Hope This Helps!

The door strap assembly is probably worn, they spead apart and the spring loaded balls that restrain the open door dont fit into their holes snugly.
You need them removing and the casing squeezing back to its original width to make them good again.

Wireman is it 'just' a case of removing the two set pins that hold the strap to the door and pulling it out or will I need to take the door card off?

Hi Dosco, just thought I would jump in here.
I have an SL 320 (1999 facelift) and have just replaced my check strap. Ordered it on Monday from Kettering MB dealer, it came in on Tuesday, and I fitted it the same day.
It cost £17 inc VAT, and yes it's a door card removal job. I also had to remove the speaker cluster too, but I'm so glad I did it myself, as I saved myself a tidy sum.
To be honest, if you want to lube the piece properly I would take it out completely. If it's like the SL it's 1 pin in the door frame, 2 small bolts in the side of the door & 1 on the face of the door inner (under the plastic)
One word of warning - be careful when putting the door card back on. The clips break so easily, It might be a good idea to buy some from MB, I wish I had!
Good luck!

Thanks for this useful info I will order up a strap from my local MB dealer in Kettering. I know what you mean about the plastic clips, had the same issue.

Regards
