I use Limiter most days - sometimes as a restraint eg in motorway roadworks or long 30mph section - sometimes so that I have to deliberately want to go faster - sometimes so that I can concentrate on the sweeping bend rather than the speedo.

I almost never use Cruise.

Yes I do not know what the tolerance is driving though road works,,with distronic I can just set 50 mph and the car will not go over that but go up and down without going over the set speed. In large towns then the limiter is better as it all stop start

I use cruise control most of the time on motorways. i find it very easy to drive long journeys since i got my MB. Previously i would be changing gears and controlling speed all the time in my Golf GTI which can get really tiring after a while.

I use both, flicking between them depending on circumstances. In traffic with gatsos where the cruise wouldn't be any use (I don't have distronic) I use the limiter. If traffic is light I switch to the cruise.

Never actually read the manual on either of my mercs but I have only ever got the speed limiter to work and not the cruise control ie I can limit the speed but cant drive without using the accelerator to maintain a speed....!Doh!

There isn't an option for using both?

Does anyone know how the limiter works?
Does it just cut the fuel or does it apply brakes as well?

The handbook says the speed limiter may change gear to limit speed, if an auto gearbox is fitted. Mine is an auto, and when I use the limiter to prevent me going faster than 30mph in town, it changes down a gear when going down hill.
I have also felt it apply the brakes when I change the limiter from 40mph to 30mph as the speed limit changes approaching towns.
As to how it works? I sincerely hope that it limits the fuel supply to the enginre appropriate to speed required and engine load. It must be, otherwise, if the fuel supply was not limited, pressing the accelerator with no increase in speed would mean unburnt fuel going somewhere. Can't believe that Merc would do that.
I also use the cruise control, to curb my impulse to go faster and faster

I use cruise on motorways and the limiter on most other type of roads. I do like the beep as your right foot hits the carpet...

I only use the Cruise on both.

I find the limiter potentialy dangerous, as if I need sudden, extra power - it's not instantly available.

So there! :D

I use cruise most of the time. Doing a lot of motorway/dual carriageway driving at the moment. Limiter is useful in city driving sometimes.

Agree - exactly my feelings. It's disconcerting to say the least when you gently squeeze the pedal and .....ziltch because you're at the limit.

You can kick down out of trouble when the limiter is on

Malcolm, you are right (again !!!). I tested mine this morning and yes, when the accelerator pedal touches the floor, it instantly switches off the speed limiter.

sailorP's comments about fuel being wasted is forgetting that the accelerator mechanism is fully electronic nowadays and the pedal position has no mechanical connection with the 'oily bits'.

Hi my ML is the first car with cruise I’ve ever owned & I use it on most motorway journeys

But I use limiter when police are behind me in town & also to run the auto box through the full range of gear changes every few weeks.

Cruise or Limiter? - I suppose its more to do with where you live and drive....

I almost never use the cruise control myself, spending most of my time on urban motorways and dual carriageways – where the weight of traffic forces and almost constant speed changing.
The limiter, however, is used regularly when driving in known speed camera ‘hot-spots’ and motorway roadworks (where they employ average speed monitoring).

It was a while before I found out that, when using the limiter, as well as when moving the lever up and down (counting up and down in five mph increments), if you pull the lever towards the steering wheel it counts up in one mph increments – ideal for a more pleasing 52 or 53mph through motorway roadworks – just enough for safety, preventing that forty tonne articulated lorry with its angry driver sitting six inches from your back bumper – presumably ‘cos his ‘50mph’ (certified tachograph) is a little faster that yours.
At first I thought the limiter was a bit of a gimmick, but now I find myself using it every day.
