Hi guys, I'm new to this sight as I've been tasked with lookiang after my mother-in-laws 190E (1991)!!!!!

It just failed its MOT on the ABS light on the dash not coming on at ignition. Could this simply be the bulb?

A more pressing problem is that it keeps cutting out. It only does it every few weeks, just cuts dead and then starts again about 10 seconds later. It does it the wet or dry so it can't be a bad earth, i've replaced the battery and checked all the leads.

It could be the bulb, but then it could be any number of things.

When you first start the car, and set off, on the first application of the brakes, do you feel any sort of vibration through the brake pedal? On my 1991 W124 it always seems to perform a small self test each time and causes a noticeable vibration on first use of the brake after startup.

Cheers,

I dont think my non ABS 190 had the ABS icon in the warning cluster, to check if there is ABS look under the bonnet on the LH inner wing, behind the head lamp there should be an ABS pump (about 200x200x100mm) with 5 pipes and some wires to it.
If its there you may have an OVP relay fault, that relay has a fuse on top of it which can get dirty and give trouble, its probably mounted behind the battery beside the ABS control unit. It is not unknown for there to be simple wiring faults such as loose connectors or even cut wires to stop the lamp illuminating.
