Hi How does Tiptronic work in relation to an ordinary auto box?

With the electric auto boxes the tiptronic function allows you to select the gear. It is useful for instant acceleration or to hold it in gear. However if you say select 3rd and you are going very slowly the car may still choose 1st or 2nd but it will not go higher than 3rd.
