Hi all,

Today I was driving along and heard a sreeching fan belt slipping noise. I hoped it was the other cars passing me, but it wasn't! Drove on another 5 miles with the odd noise. On leaving the supermarket ( a man's gotta shop!) the noise was hideous, all sorts of clanking and crap. I stopped and checked the what was happening and noticed the spring part of the accessory belt dampening unit has jumped off the mounting. Fortunately, i had some tools on board, unfortunately i needed three arms to effect a repair. Called out breakdown, they turned up late and I ended up showing him how to prise the spring back on the top mounting! Question is, why did the ****** spring jump off in the first place? I have been having trouble that may be a bearing on the A/C compressor pump. Could this have seized up temporarily and bounced the spring off? FYI i replaced the dampening strut last year and it seemed to be strong , no play at all, when i checked today.

Thanks

This is a hard one, normally once a bearing on something has gone, thats the end of it, if the comp pump still turns smoothly it will not be that.

I think, for now that I would carry a suitible object in the car to put the spring back on if it comes off again, and see what happens.

Hmmm, I had a similar problem a few months back but in my case the hook on the top end of the spring had broken off. The tension on it is quite high, no idea why it would fall off?

I suggest you see if the shocker is in good health.
