Hello, new to the forum and need your assistance please anyone.
I have an E220. Noticed water ingress coming in to the car from the top of the windscreen.
Took it to Mercedes was verbally told the windscreen was not bonded and I had to replace it at my expense as I am out of warranty.
On insurance - Autoglass also confirmed it had not been bonded from manufacturers.
It is clearly a manufacturing defect and I believe Mercedes should bear the cost of fixing. Worse I (my family)have been driving around what is an unsafe car through no fault of mine or wear and tear.

Concerned there are others out there with similar issues.

Anyone with a similar experience? Any advice how to go about ensuring Merc fix the windscreen?

The car is 5 years old and if you have full MBSH then a contribution might be reasonable to expect as you are 2 years out of the manufacturing defect warranty.

If you bought it second hand and haven't had it serviced at MB then you are I would suspect going to struggle to get anything.

I don't see it as particularly dangerous unless you can push it out.

I seem to remember big Volvo 4WD's having a similar problem

On the other hand, if Autoglass will confirm that, in their expert opinion, the screen had not been bonded properly from manufacture - then you can go back to your MB Dealer and start making more noise.

- Better than just rolling over, and you have nothing to lose.

A hammer and a quick tap will sort it..... Make sure you are in a convenient place like next to your insurance companies recommended installer....

Seriously though, If its a manufacturing defect and you can get an authoritative body to confirm it in writing then you go back to the Dealer and tell them that a Court will consider it is not fit for purpose and will most likely award in your favour.

Wonder if there is any corrosion due to water ingress - if it’s been that way from the factory I’m surprised that it’s only just started leaking, and think it would smell very musty if it’s been leaking for 5 years?

Thank you for your comment Flyinspanner. In this case the age of the car is not of particular relevance. The core issue is that Mercedes has been negligent in their duty of care.
The windscreen is not bonded, wasn't bonded from factory, that is Mercedes failure and negligence.
That is not even in contest as they (Mercedes) actually brought that fact to my attention in the first case.
This is not my first, second or third Merc (by the way all were bought from Merc and I see day to day & they are older than my current car) none of them was sold with a potentially dangerous unbounded windscreen.

Thank you Front step. I have taken particular note of your comment. You have been very specific about the age of my car. Secondly you have also been specific about the length of time on my manufacturers warranty. And thirdly to some extent about my MBSH.
This has not been information I posted. Information that Mercedes would have.
This on so many levels breaches the data protection act and GDPR. As you have come to mention this on on a public forum.
I shall be taking this up.

Thank you for your comments davidsl500. I am not that kind of person . It would only be a falsehood. However I will consider every legal avenue open to me, more so since lives have been put at risk.

In “Your Mercedes” you have put “E220 2015” so @Frontstep is using information you’ve provided to help you...

Mercedes warranty is 3 years from new, this is common knowledge.

The other information you haven’t advised on (how long you have had the car and where you bought it from) .

This is also very relevant as Mercedes don’t often entertain claims outside of warranty to recent Mercedes owners as they take the view that the car was bought with the issue that is now being claimed for, so the owner is looking to improve the car they bought for free.

If you’ve had the car from new or nearly new then it could be a different story. Also if you bought from Mercedes their 1 year used car warranty is generally pretty good although glass issues aren’t always covered. Have to read the warranty papers if you have Mercedes used car warranty.

That is incorrect. The post is still up. No where did I put "E220 2015".

However I am only interested in resolving the issue swiftly

From your first post in this thread...

The sunroof issue is well documented on this forum and not related to your windscreen issue.

How long have you had the car and where did you purchase it from?

You have a very strange attitude to people trying to advise you!

As others have advised:
Get a written professional opinion from Auto glass or similar that it has been like that from new (and we are assuming it's never had a replacement windscreen fitted).
Use that to go back to MB dealer where you purchased the vehicle pointing out that if it were to go to small claims court you would almost certainly gain a ruling in your favour as the vehicle was unfit for purpose with a potential safety defect.
There is no point in going after MBUK as you have no contract with them. That's the dealers problem to sort out.

I'm surprised it's taken 5 years to be noticed to be honest and that's a question a court would also ask if it went that route.

The area where it's not bonded must be quite small or be at the base of the screen for it not to leak like a sieve .

Thank you lostKiwi. That was very helpful.
I've had the car just 2 years.
I noticed it earlier but only just taken action. I suppose the recent down pour of rain we've had this year have made it more obvious.
