Wonder if any off you guys can help?
I have not used my C lass C200 02, for the past month or so?when I did the engine would not start?I charged the battery?still nothing happened, I called my local Mercedes dealer?. They sent around someone, who said the battery was totally knackered ?.so I paid him £110 for a new one?the engine starts up fine now?but none of the electronics work..i.e windows/indicators/dashboard display etc?..i took the car down to the dealership they said the computer will have to be reprogrammed??they are asking for £500?.should I accept this??does this price sound reasonable?

If your car is a saloon, I would point to the fact that the \original battery was faulty and because of this, your ECU needs to re-programed. A battery to fail in 3 years on a new car, in my opinion is unacceptable. In light of the recall of all RHD W203 saloons because of a possible battery defect, I think you should demand the return of the £110 and ask them to reprogramme the computer at no charge. I would put this in writing to the dealer, and if your demand is not forthcoming, contact MB customer services.SEE http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=11323

Agreed - Batteries don't fail in 3 years. It does sound like yours is one that should have been replaced under recall. Also, if your car is an 02, its either still under warranty or else on just out and should be covered on a goodwill basis. FYI - My 1996 C class is still on its original battery as is my 2000 E class. No problems with either.
On the £500 point - An ECU/dash reprogram involves the dealer plugging a laptop into your car and pressing a few buttons - 5 min job. Under the circumstances, this should be free but in any case £500 is absurd.

You might point out that £110 for a battery is twice what the same battery would cost you at any motor factors! so they've already made their money.

I have caught my dealer quoting silly prices for simple tasks - e.g. £100 to replace a sun visor mirror, and when I needed a replacement pad on the side of my seat, it would have to be booked in and trailered to a specialist trimming shop in the next town. Both jobs were done my me, with the mirror taking the longest at 4 minutes! (replacement pad just clipped on - 30 secs).

In short - laugh at them and suggest they have another go.
