Sorry about putting this in to the general section but I wasn't sure which section of DIY to put it in

I am getting a message in the centre of my dashboard saying "Start engine. See owners manual" with a battery symbol above it. It comes on as soon as I put the key in and again when I turn it off.

Unfortunately the owners manual doesn't mention this one. I am assuming that the battery is low due to limited use lately but can anybody confirm?

I am going to put a charger on the jump start points for a while but I am not sure whether this will charge both batteries.

Sounds very like the battery is low, it's asking for the engine to be started so the battery can get some charge.

Get it on a battery conditioner if you can

I've also moved it to the correct section for you :)

Hi Pete

My SL does that when the battery in the key fob needs changing. It's something to do with keyless go, I think

Yes - get battery on a maintainer. Lots of strange things with low battery, cold weather and limited use!

Thanks for the responses.

24 hours on charge and it is fine now.

I thought that was the cause but wasn't sure whether the jumpstart points under the bonnet charged both batteries. They are a bit of a fiddle on my car as to get a clamp on the positive means that the bonnet needs to be left open by a good few inches. Fine if it is in a garage (try getting a LWB S class in most garages) but no good if you have it outside on the drive. I eventually did it by putting a screw through a loop and screwing it down between the ridges so that I could almost close the bonnet.
