Dashboard display intermittently stop working

I have a C250 D estate, 1998 model, and recently over the last few months the daskboard display bits (speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge, temp sensor) have stopped working intermittently, but it seems to be getting worse.

Usually it happens when I start the car, either they will all work, or they will all remain dead. sometimes at the start they would suddenly flick on whilst driving but this seems to have stopped and now if they don't come on when I start the car they usually won't come on until I stop and start the car again. Sometimes just stopping and starting again is enough to fix it, but often it seems to need to be left for a while.

Any ideas?

The biggest suspect will be the ignition switch or a bad connection on the cluster

The cluster is the instrument cluster, this id the complete thing with the speedo etc in it, this unit can be pushed out from the rear of the car when you have removed the kick panel under the dash

One thing I forgot that you could have some fuses for this, I would clean them all up with a non drying switch cleaner (maplins) tough with the spade type fuses they seldom give problems, the round type do
