Dealer phone pre-wire on 2005 CLK

I've just bought a 2005 CLK that didn't have phone pre-wiring, but the MB dealer fitted the pre-wiring and phone cradle etc.

My question is this: currently the phone can only be controlled from the steering wheel, not the central console. Is this correct, or (as I believe), should the central console be working correctly as well?

In my 2003 E-class all works fine - but that was a factory fit pre-wiring kit. I wasn't anticipating any difference in function. Am I wrong in this assumption?

the telephone should work thru the central control not just the steering wheel.

the wheel buttons are there to save you using the other buttons but will only allow accept call and cut call.....

in the central unit you should also be able to mute the call etc.....can you access the phone book thru your wheel? you should be able to do that thru the central unit too.

I have COMAND on mine and it is able to do all the functions from the central unit but only basic functions thru the 8 steering wheel mounted buttons.

Center console doesn't work with phone

I just got a response back from my dealer regarding the phone they fitted before delivery (pre-wiring wasn't already installed)... they said

"full factory functionality cannot be achieved with the head unit within the car due to the fact that the main fibre optic loom of the car would need to be patched in and damage can occur when this is done. M-B do not supply a kit to us with this option for that reason,"

The shame is that we also have an E-class that had the factory pre-wire fitted, so we know what a fully working system is like!

However I'm still confused as trawling the web for details of M-B UHI phone kits suggests it all should work with the non-COMAND centre console.

Does anyone have any comments or suggestions on what I can do?
