I have left a deposit on a E 320 Cdi estate avantgarde. When I left this deposit I didn`t know about the valeo problems. I am wondering if I entitled to insist they change the radiator should it be the valeo one, and if so, do you think they should stand the cost of replacement.. What are your thoughts on this.

No Dave you cannot insist on this on a just in case basis. By all means tell them of your concern and reasons. Are you buying from a MB dealer

Then you could work something out with them I think, and come to a good compromise

If you are buying from a main dealer I think that it would be a newer car, which is not affected by the Valeo issue. Even if it is an early car there is a very good chance that it had been rectified already

Mercedes used cars come with a 1 year warranty don't they? Put some glycol in your ATF and ask them to do a test and get the radiator changed under warranty lol.

You know I was only joking right .... I do not condone such dishonesty

What's the 'valeo problem' ?

Sorry - I'm sure it's in the archive somewhere but I did a search on 'valeo problem' but there's a squillion results - people referring to the 'valeo problem' but I can't actually find anything that explains what it is.

It is where the rad leaks glycol into the gear box through a tiny hole,,this raises the surface of the clutches in the torque converter, and this maks a humming and or droning sound when pulling lightly in top gear

Thank you. So is this a design fault or incorrect servicing ?

Is there a list of vehicle (types/year etc) affected ?

Thanks

The cars affected were the 203,209 and 211 for cars built up to the 30-09-03, but many 04 cars have come along with this problem, and indeed a couple of 220's
