not 100% but i think its either in the fuse box or under the bonnet on the p/s near the w/screen ull see a round bit of plastic with a 13mm size nut in the middle half a turn and it will come off. think the socket is round with 38 pins

E280 (124) Engine code 104.942 1993-95

DLC under bonnet on strut top inner wing mounting.

1) Lift off cover and plug fly lead in socket 2

2) Switch ignition on

3) Press test button for 0.5 - 1 sec.

4) Note trouble codes ( count flashes)

Trouble codes consist of a sequence of three groups of flashes
a three second pause seperates each group.

e.g. .*..*......*..*......*..*..*. = 2 2 3 (fault code) idle speed actuator

Hope this helps

Mick

As Mick says the 16 pin Diagnostic socket is in the engine compartment near to the OS suspension strut.

You need to lift the lid off, but do not be surprised if you find NO pushbutton.

You need a dedicated 3 lead code reader with LED and switch built-in.

The leads go to pins 1 and 16 with lead 3 being plugged into the relevant system being tested eg. engine controls and sensors being pin 8.

The LED will give flashes depending on the sensor which is at fault. Maximum of 2 flashes representing 2 digit code eg. 22 being coil (cylinder 1) misfire.

So, the LED flash code reader is a very simple device.

Alternative, more expensive proper "Fault Code Readers" are used by Merc specialists, and those give a 3 digit code beginning with a 0 eg. 055. (same fault as above).

You need to get the specialist in and he will charge you for half hour say, plus travelling at perhaps £50 per hour.

Hope this helps you to diagnose your non starting.

Regards

Be asured my 1995 E320 104 engine has the 16 pin diagnostic socket. I have put together my own code reader and it works well.

Previous post should have read "2 'sets' of flashes" .........

Would anyone know will a reader like the elmscan one or the mobydic one read the codes from a W210 96 (round 38 pin socket). I have a mobydic and can buy an adapter cable to go from 38pi to standard obd11 - but will it work. On other makes the ability fro the mobydic to cennect has been very patchy on pre 2000 cars

I see where you are coming from - the 16 pin socket I am refering to is Merc design not the OBD2 system used on year 2000 cars onwards ie. standardised J1962 - 16 pin socket inside car near steering column.
