Hi All,
Has anyone tried any of the Diesel fuel additive?
I have used the Millers Dieselclean stuff on past cars..
But I seem to recall hearing somewhere that the addition of additives is frowned on by MB..
I have recently been reading on this forum about adding "2T" 2 stroke oil to the diesel fuel.. How does this compare?

On the subject of the 2 stroke oil I gather that you must use the NON SYNTHETIC version.. Why is this?

The Major oil companies have all the additives that your car should require already in their fuel. The MB owners manual discourages the use of add it yourself additives. Instead of paying the extra for these additives just buy from the Major oil companies and avoid supermarket fuel that does not contain additives.

It is still said in the trade that Millars 4 raises the cetane levels in diesel thus giving a better burn.

Many MB dealers use "Forte" additives on services.

Yes, but MB diesels are designed to burn pump fuel to European standards.

If we lived in a country where the cetane levels of pump fuel was inadequate or poor, like in the US for example, then, I could see the point, but, in the UK, it's an expensive waste of money.

It is a debate that will continue as long cars are around, a bit like face creams and moistureisers, those that swear for them and those that swear at them...
Someone told me once that during his apprenticeship at a local garage one of his duties was to serve at the pumps and all cars when they came in to fill up got a free squirt of redex.. That would work for me

When i had to work on the pumps in the early sixties (part of a mechanics training or just cheap labour, take your pick) very few people asked for redex as we used to charge for it 1/2d (halfpenny) a shot. Lots of older cars in those days did not need upper cylinder lubricant as they used to burn oil like there was no tomorrow.

One of my friends was the local RedX rep, we used to get our shots free, you are right about the old engines 25k was the max for the average

That's the sort of nostalgia that leads you to remember "The piston that had a familiar ring to it" - well it had before the oil consumption started - but that is an even longer time ago ............

The motoring mags of that time were full of adds for special oil control scraper rings, and as today everyone made the best one

Old mercs on steroids - it works.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a reputable german engineer posted a scientific report on the benefits of adding a small amount of std. 2 t. oil to your diesel tank,

i have tried it over a 3 months period, got the 2t oil from asda £3 for a litre.the basic stuff not the synthetic expensive stuff. to a 75 litre tank you add 25cc's of the 2t oil. circa 75 pence.

your diesel pump runs smoother, less friction, also the esters in the 2t oil improve the valency of the fuel, ( combines more with oxygen and produces a better burn), the injector pressure release valves also perform better, quicker release less friction. no sign at all of smoking at the exhaust.

over the past 3 months i have a 10% improvement in my mpg. i also as an engineer like the idea of knowing the expensive to repair fuel pump is being re-embursed for the reduction we now have in the low suphur fuels we have to buy, which is good for the environment but bad for fuel pump longevity. recon fuel pumps are circa £700 to £1500 to recon. so do try the 2t oil , it works. herbiemercman.

I've also been using it for a few months now, makes the engine quieter when first started from cold.

I used to use the Millers Diesel additive..
Is this not the same thing?
The oil you recommend, is it in the Car oil section of Asda? I ask cos I have never heard of 2T
Do any other supermarkets sell it? Our local one is Morrisons..
What about Halfords? Will they sell it?
I will certainly give this a try but I wasnt to be sure I get the correct stuff..
Will any non synthetic motor oil do or is it secifically the 2T stuff?

Thanks

2T is two stroke oil.
No need for synthetic, the cheapest stuff will do as long as it says low ash.
I get mine from Tesco, around £3.40 a litre.

hi simon, as rf065 says, you just need the basic 2t oil, circa £3.20 at asda. not part or fully synthetic, these are much more expensive and not necessary, all be it they will do the same job.

with reference to injector / fuel system cleaners, they are ok in my opinion if used say every 20,000 miles, used too often and the agressive solvents can loosen carbon in the combustion areas, valves, piston ring seals etc, this will reduce your compression and compromise your combustion, it could also increase engine oil consumption on a high mileage car.

to a far lesser degree the 2t oil will massage away some surface carbon without going too deep to damage the chamber seals which has formed by years of carbon build up.herbiemercman.

hi roadhog , the vegioil will improve combustion as it improves the valency of the diesel however the fuel pump and seals suffer it does not match the 2t oil for lubrication. herbiemercman.

what about a 2001 320 c.d.i. engine ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

would it be ok to add 2 stroke oil to a 320 c.d.i. engine ? as i thought the c.d.i.'s were more tempremental with stuff added due to the finer tolerances etc ? would it do my engine some good ? and if it would, how much should i add? . The car's a w210 320 c.d.i.

I remember my dad treating the Zephyr

to two shots if she'd been behaving. and getting highball glasses with every gallon of fuel. I still have some of them. You don't get quality giveaways like those anymore.......

My father told me of how he, as a teenager, used to offer, for a small charge, shots of redex at the service station in what must have been the late 50's. However they had a bit of a scam going. After a few cars had been provided with their redex, the bottle was topped with fuel.

Apparently one bottle of redex could go a very long way!

I used to know a pump attendant (working on the retail pumps at a coach company) that used to fill the pint glass oil bottles with diesel engine oil (intended for the coaches) and sell it to unsuspecting customers for their petrol engined cars, made a fortune for himself.

That oil has a high level of detergent.

Lots of clean petrol engines running around, then, on the their way to conrod bearing failure ! (big ends)

No problem when you use detergent oil from new but when you introduce it in to a worn engine you just wash all the cr?p off, and as you say, all goes to pot. I did same thing when i had a Morris Isis in the sixties (six cyl BMC engine) blew the ends on way to Blackpool on the M6, in those days you could just do a U turn (still offence but no central barrier and hardly any traffic) and go back home with the engine knocking like hell.
