My 98 c250 TD struggles to start when tank is under a quarter full. I have changed fuel filter and air filter but has made no differance. When tank is full it starts perfectly.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Diesels are not my line but these faults are nearly always down to air leaks, and this can be anywhere from the supply lines to the return to tank.

It all here after BM

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb1.as...910&GA=722.427&GM=717.417&CT=F&Cat=44V&SID=47

Could the filter be clogged and it needs that full tank to push the fuel through,, they seldom get changed when they should be.

Hopefully a techie will give some advice

Is this an OM605?

If so, then, as Malcolm says, air leaks are the first thing to deal with.

There are O ring seals at each end of the low pressure pipes between the fuel heater, the fuel filter, and the injector pump. There is also an O ring behind the shut off valve on the pump. The fuel pre-filter O ring seal is also frequenly the cause of an air leak.

To change all of these, you'll probably find it easier to take the intake manifold off. While it's off, replace the (doubtlessly brittle and cracked) plastic clips which clamp the injector pipes, and replace all of the injector leak off pipes - the cost of the parts for the whole job is very cheap, and so, there's no reason not to do a proper job while you're there.

The OM605/606 engine air leak strikes again! Just replace all the O-rings in the fuel lines and the problem will go away for another 10 years

Yes I have just sorted this problem out on my c250td, I replaced all the transparent fuel pipes which seem to have been redesigned to make it easier to change just the o-ring seals in future, I also replaced the leak off pipes on top of the engine.
one word of caution if you do take the manifold off, watch out for broken bits of plastic that used to hold the injector pipes, a small piece almost fell into engine inlet as I removed the manifold, lucky I spotted it just in time

Replacement 'o' rings & pipes?

I am living in France and after reading the forum realise that I need to change my 'o' rings and fuel pipes on my C250D. I have searched the web and can't find a supplier who has them in stock and will post them to me. Does anyone know where they might be available - mail order?

Hiya Keith, the pipes cost about £35 from the main dealer, hope this helps
