went to see a diesel specialist after work on friday who told me to run a gravity feed tank directly onto the injector pump to see if the fault is in the pump. however, i have just realised that the fuel cut off is not actually on the pump, but in line. how can i shut the engine off when its hot, without allowing air into the "system" so that i can attempt to restart it after a short wait (15 mins or so) without it giving false results (dont want to have to have the pump repaired if its not necessary!)

All help gratefully recieved :confused::confused:

Stick a large piece of rag over the air filter intake pipe no air no go!

>>how can i shut the engine off when its hot,

Just switch it off at the key. There are two ways that your engine is brought to a stop. One slightly indirect way, is via the shut off valve, and the other is via the solenoid actuator which moves the fuel rack to the "no fuel" position.

as far as im aware, all 210 300 turbodiesels are auto. no listing in the owners books for manual version

i will need to run it to temp with the inlet manifold removed as i need to access the pipe unions directly onto the injector pump

im not sure about this but i think you may be thinking of the earlier pump, similar to that fitted to the 124's and some 210's with a vacuum shut off and a manual lever in case the vacuum fails. mine is the later all electronic pump and the shut off solenoid is part of a plastic/bakerlite unit with 4 wires attached for the shut off and fuel temp sensor. imreally struggling with this problem now and i dont want to get the pump re con'd and find out thats not the problem (at great cost, even though as far as i can tell ive eliminated everything else)

If i am wrong and there is a way of shutting the fuel off in the pump manually without the shut off valve, can you tell me where this is located/how this is done please

No. Why not try it? Rig up an independent feed to the shut off valve and then see if the engine stops?

Yes, this involves some effort on your part, but no expenditure beyond a couple of lengths of wire and a fuse to protect your temporary circuit.

i intend to, but as yet ive been unable to find out how the electronic shut off valve works as theres 4 wires to it. i know 2 are for the crank sensor pulses and 2 are for the fuel temp to the ecu, but dont want to fry anything expensive. or is there something ive missed here? i keep looking at diagrams of the pump on online epc pics, but i cant see another way of shutting it off, and i was told to connect direct to the pump, bypassing everything not directly attached to the pump. theres obviously another way though, that i need to look into. all help gratefrully recieved

What I would do is backprobe the 4 pins, and check their voltage relative to earth with the ignition off, the ignition on, the engine cold but running, and the engine warm and running. From these measurements, you should be able to tell which wire does what.

if my theory is correct on the shut off valve on my pump, i think it cuts off the supply of fuel between the filter and the pump, so would i be correct in thinking that this is as close as i can get to connecting directly to the pump and still have a way to shut the engine off without having to induce air into the system deliberately?
