Having sorted my fuel relay problem, thanks for your assistance Andy. I would like to ask if there are any adjustments a competant home mechanic can do to the diff on a 230E 123 223(1981). At speeds of over 85mph I get a hum from under the rear seat. I am assuming it is the rear diff and wonder if there is anything that can be done about it.It is not tyres as I have 4 brand new and balanced.If I grab the prop shaft when the car is off, but in Drive, there is a  bit of play in rotation. Hi Russell

If its the diff. Then there is nothing you can do. EXCEPT! The ultimate cure. Turn the radio up!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It probably needs overhauling or replacing. But before you think second. Remember. All 123's have done fair millage know. So you will probably be in the same situation if you replace it.

Thanks Andy, this one has done 261 000km, and as it is family owned from new, I know the history. It did a lot of caravan pulling in South Africa, which can't be easy on the duff. Thanks for your advise I will steer well clear if it then.

I havent bought a caravan yet,and while it is on the cards, the 230E will not do the pulling. I don't think the four cylinder is up to it, I have only ever towed with V6 and Straight 6 and I think I will stick to that. The 230 is a toy and has sentimental value only, plus I do like driving it, but is is no work horse and with the air con on it is very sluggish.
