diff oil seals

diff pinion oil seal was noted to be leaking when i was under the car at the weekend. what oil is required in the diff? are the oil seals easy to change or does the diff need pre tensioned if the flange needs removed? if its a nightmare i may try some forte seal conditioner 1st!

If your final drive is quiet, then, I wouldn't disturb the pinion to replace the oil seal. I would just make sure I top up the oil more frequently.

Hi,
My diff on the C230K has shown signs of leaking from when it only had 24,500 miles, not sure what grade oil is in it but in a 115,000 miles its only needed about 1/2 litre to top it up in all that time.
When ever its been serviced its always been noted and checked, and told to keep an eye on it, but it has never got any worse, I was always told that it was common and nothing to worry about as it would only be caused by a blocked breather which is awkward to get at with the diff unit in place (this is what i was told).

most diff leaks are usually caused by overfilling, this is what i have found anyhow

Do clean the vent on top, hypoid oil foams.

thanks guys. i only noticed it because there was a nice strip of oil sprayed all over everything in line with the pinion oil seal when i was changing the tank strainer!
