I'm about to change the differential oil in my W124 E280 1995.

No type of oil or quantities are given in the handbook or my manual.

Can anyone tell me what should be using (and how much I need to buy). Should I use an additive (like molyslip)?

It's got no leaks and it only makes the slightest whine on the over-run. Although MB say it's not necessary to change the oil, I think after seven years is must surely be ready for a change!

Differential Oil

Hi Doug

Normal EP\HP 90 gear oil will do. Unless its limited slip diff. Noted by the plate bolted to the lower part of the back plate.

Hope this helps

PS. I agree that the axle oil should be changed, quite why MB say not. Is beyond me. Especially when you see sludge which should be oil being drained from axles.

Differential Oil

Andys correct you know....

Also providing you don't have a limited slip diff
MolySlip is very very good.

'Molybednium disulphate' (that's probably not spelt correctly) has been used for years by car manufacturers when assembling cars to stop wear on the intitial run up of a new engine.

Differential Oil

Hi Doug
MB are correct, you do not need to change your diff oil .
My own car is up to 160k on the original oil with out any problems ,most modern cars do not provide a means for draining the oil(no plug) because the manufacturer fills them with the CORRECT type of oil for life. however Doug you do whatever makes you feel best ,BUT make sure you use top quality & correct type of oil.
Regards,
Barnie
PS I would not advise additives!.
