New CLC. Anyone know what the amber indicator light on the underside of the interior rear view mirror is, and should it be on all the time, even when the car is locked? This unit has been changed as part of my battery drain problems but having been told by the dealer that it should not be on all the time, I find that the new one is just the same??? Not too impressed by the dealer though, I think they tell me fibs.

The amber light under te RVM is for ambient lighting, it is on all the time the icar s unlocked. It takes away the total darkness and aids finding controls on the centre console.

When you say it is also on when the car is locked is this permanent as many functions remain 'alive' for a short while after locking

As above, if the lamp is on, it should go out once the car has gone to sleep, the OVC as it is known is a key component for the car not going to sleep and draining the battery

It remains on after the car is locked but i have no idea for how long. Will have to check. Takes quite a long time to go to sleep I think, about 45 min?

20 to 25 mins max to go to sleep, though I did think that it went out when the car was locked,,I do not have one on my SL

I'm failry sure this should go out when the ignition key is removed.
Going on how mine behaves, as you take the key out, the interior lights come on and the led goes out instantly (not needed once the interior light is on).
Once the interior light goes out after locking, the interior of the car should be in darkness. If its not, there's a fault.

And this is my understanding of how it should be

Well, having just checked mine (much to the amusment of the neighbours!) the light comes on as the car is unlocked and remains on once the car is locked for approx 10sec.
