Hi
I have been trying with no luck to find the part in the diy section that shows you how to make your own dipstick to check the oil level in the autobox.
Could someone perhaps provide a link?
Thanks

All you need is a length of curtain wire, and the measurements are between 5 and 6 cm when the fluid is hot.

Push it in carefully and touch the bottom

Not quite true. The factory stick has a shoulder which contacts a pinch point in the dip tube and suspends the end of the stick above the sump (presumably to allow for variations in or damage to the sump and to stop false readings from the stick sliding along the sump).

Factory part number is W140589152100 for 722.6 box (all car models that use this 'box).

If you want to use curtain rod then you will need to add a "collar" of some sort to contact the dipstick tube shoulder - a 7mm washer expoy'd on would work - just make sure it can't fall off! The factory stick lower end looks and measures like this:

Yes and true only to a point as we have done test with the homemade stick and my factory one.

The factory one can only be 0.01 off the bottom of the sump so impossible to find any difference in the measurements, between 5 and 6cm is near enough, after all it is a sump only

I followed maolcom's advice on the dipping when I had a box slip. it was good enough to get me going again and when i did check with the correct dipping tool it was more or less the same readings from my home made job. so, accurate, maybe not, good enough, deffo yes

Setting aside the accuracy need, OP the dipping needs to be with the fluid at 80C (i.e. after a run of at least 5 miles) and with the engine running, gearbox in Park.

I couldn't resist having a play - using a B&Q drain cleaning rod on my car, the difference between factory stick and dipper contacting the sump is 4mm.

Thank you for doing that, very kind of you, that would best then to say that with the home made stick, between 5.7cm and 5.7cm

Just for the record

W211 220D auto

722.699 box level should be 570 mm with a homemade dipstick / device that just contacts sump, when at 80 c in park engine idling ?

oil level in box!

this old chesnut keeps coming up, I have dipped my 722.6 box that has the correct! level, with the curtain wire diy dip stick and malcombs figures are spot on . no need for any queries, those figures are correct, if you are in between his figures your are in the ball park and if your box is slipping or playing up, a pint or half litre isnt going to cure it! as he says its a sump with max and min levels as well as cold and hot measurement levels.. this has been done to death over the past threads. if you dig around in the back log there is lots of info on this topic.
