All you need is a length of curtain wire, and the measurements are between 5 and 6 cm when the fluid is hot.
Push it in carefully and touch the bottom
Not quite true. The factory stick has a shoulder which contacts a pinch point in the dip tube and suspends the end of the stick above the sump (presumably to allow for variations in or damage to the sump and to stop false readings from the stick sliding along the sump).
Factory part number is W140589152100 for 722.6 box (all car models that use this 'box).
If you want to use curtain rod then you will need to add a "collar" of some sort to contact the dipstick tube shoulder - a 7mm washer expoy'd on would work - just make sure it can't fall off! The factory stick lower end looks and measures like this:
Yes and true only to a point as we have done test with the homemade stick and my factory one.
The factory one can only be 0.01 off the bottom of the sump so impossible to find any difference in the measurements, between 5 and 6cm is near enough, after all it is a sump only
I couldn't resist having a play - using a B&Q drain cleaning rod on my car, the difference between factory stick and dipper contacting the sump is 4mm.

Just for the record

722.699 box level should be 570 mm with a homemade dipstick / device that just contacts sump, when at 80 c in park engine idling ?
OK lets try 57 mm them @80 deg ?
note to self,
wear your bl**dy glasses!
You must have the cleanest dipstick tube on any Mercedes!
