HI,im about to change the front disc's and pads on a C 200 sport saloon
P Reg early 1997. Before i hash it up,do the calipers come off whole or do i have to break them down. If you have any info that would be great.I changed some on a cavalier and that was pretty straight forward. Also do i need any special tool to get the disc off. Cheers Kelly

Hi Kelly, This isn't a smart arse answer just common sense. Buy youself a Haynes manual. I recently replaced my front disc pads and checked the rear pads on my 96 C180 following the instructions in the Haynes manual and it was very straightforward. The disc change is also explained in the text.
Good luck.

This is a straight forward job, but do get the Haynes book as it gives you the torque wrench settings which are important.

Take the pads out, then undo the caliper bolts and the whole lot comes off in one piece. The caliper bolts were really tight on mine (ended up using a good ring spanner and a scafold pole!). Small hex head bolt holds the disc on which sometimes shears off (mine did).

MB recommend you use new caliper bolts and retaing bolt each time, but I have been told by an MB partsman that this is only because the new bolts are treated with threadlocking compound (you can do this yourself).

I would strongly recommend using all MB parts if possible, they are not much more expensive than pattern parts, and will not give you any trouble.

Good luck.

When I replaced disks I needed a G clamp to get the pads back into the caliper to allow for the extra thickness of the new disk. Sheared bolts is a potential problem. I have not done it on the Merc but had to on most of my other cars. No great problem except brake disk can be sort of seized on with a little rust. Be careful how you hit the disk, they are cast iron and can break.

Front disc change c200 sport

I had a go at removing the bolts in the caliper.first came out ok. The second one i could'nt budge it. i have not tried the scaffold pole yet Olaf. The question is if one shears off how do i get the bit thats in there out.And could anyone tell me the size of the bolts.I forgot to measure it when i removed it. And is it best to use a ring spanner or a socket plus the scaffold pole. Cheers for any help Kelly

Some careful application of WD40 would be considerably less risky than scaffold tube. Squirt some in every few hours if it still won't budge. I was able to easily remove a 20-year-old Mini rear subframe after giving it regular doses of WD40 for the preceeding week.

Kelly, don't be afraid of using an extension to remove the caliper bolts. They're big bolts and pretty tough, highly unlikely to shear. It's the little bolt holding the actual disc in place which is inclined to break, but it's not too critical, and if it broke the disc would come off anyway, then you would have something to get hold of to remove the rest of the broken bolt. Even if you didn't manage that no matter, its purpose is just to keep the disc from wobbling a bit when you change a wheel. It's the wheelstuds which keep it attached to the car!!
As suggested, liberal dosing with WD40 or PlusGas helps.
Good luck.
