I just read in an old post that the cooling fan should be dis-connected if applying an external 12 volt supply to the car, this may explain a problem I've had, can anyone explain this to me ?

My problem was in my first post, no glowplugs & starter, the first indication of any problems was when I'd left it standing and flattened the battery, when on charge one night I heard the cooling fan running, so disconnected the battery for charging. After that she started briefly died and then no more, I traced the fault to the small fuse & relay box behind the diagnostics plug but have got no further.
My car is a 1999 W202 C220 cdi estate and yes it has rust.

I think that you will find that the N65/1 control module has water in it, and/or some dampness in the front fuse box,,the one with the 2 lids

Ignore the control module,,if the fan runs with the ignition off,,then just the water /damp in the front SAM box,,the SAM should be lifted and dried and 2 replacement lids fitted to the box.
