Bought a 2000 320SLK yesterday..

Can anyone tell me the minimum thickness of disks for 320SLK

It needs new pads all round, there is a fair ridge at the edge of the disks. If the thickness is ok, can this be ground off?

Any suggestions where I could get this technical info? There doesn't seem to be a Haynes manual.

Regards
Colin

Hi, welcome to the forum, no there is no manual, and when I did my front brakes I fitted new Apec discs for £25 each, that was on a 230 SLK, get a price from your local motor factor, you may be pleasantly surprised.

The minimum disc thickness is usually stamped on the rim of solid discs or the hub of ventilated ones.

Since the demise of asbestos in pad material, discs have become as sacrificial as pads and as the previous posts have indicated, costs have fallen. If there is any significant ridging it is rarely cost effective to refurbish discs rather than replace them.

Minimum is 26mm on the front discs for your car.

7.6mm for the rear.

Thanks for the replies - that's encouraging!

re. workshop manual - is this available anywhere? on DVD? Seems an uphill struggle to get to grips with the mechanics of this beast - I can't even see how the air filter removes!

I have 23.5 & 22.9 at front - so obviously they need changed.

8.53 and 8.64 at the back.

Anyone know the new thickness of the rear discs? If they start at 9 they wont be worn much, if 12 then I guess I should replace.

re. brake pad wear sensors - are they sacrificial? I had a GSi Carlton, when the sensors touched the discs the light came on - and they had to be replaced.

The pad warning light has now started coming on in the SLK

If you ever find a manual - let me know! There is a fair amount of info on maintaining the SLK on the web, but you have to do an awful lot of searching.

I have emailed you a .pdf on changing the air filters which might help to get you started.

Good Luck!
