The buttons can fail, but only because the grease used on the rocker switches gets hot and runs onto the contacts.

They are easy to fix, though it may look a little daunting at first glance. It took me 15 mins to dismantle and clean the contacts.
First take a picture as pic 1, so that you know what goes where.

Un clip all of the buttons as far as the 4 on pic 2. The mirror control has 2 spring loaded plungers, so take care not to loose them, the heater switch white rocker just come out by squeezing one of the leg ends in slightly.

It should then look like pic 3

Now all the parts taken off are in pic 4

Once your switch bank looks the same as pic 3 you can then prise of the top cover by pressing in the clips around the outer edge.

With the top cover off you can see all of the contacts,,it is best to wash off all of the grease with lighter fuel,, leave to dry and then apply plenty of non drying switch cleaner to the contacts,, once it is opened up you can see them all,, and they can be pressed open to be sure that the contact cleaner gets onto the points.

Pic 5 is the inside.

Now put it all back in the reverse order,,the mirror switch can be fiddly to get the springs in.

It took me 15 minutes from start to finish, and the quickest £90 that I would have saved

Television. Is there a simple way to test this other than putting it back into the car to try.

EG Are there connections between particular pins made to activate the window motors etc. The RAC bloke didnt have a clue and insisted the switch was fine and I would have to get a new motor (utter rubbish).

Not when the switch is altogether as it is hard to find the pin outs,,the whole point is that you should have 12 volts gong to the window motor when the switch is pressed,,and this is the first test to do
